Annual Drone Day Playlist (2025)

If you've seen any of my previous writings about Drone Day, you may know that I look forward to this annual celebration every year, and that Black Stone Sanctuary typically observes Drone Day by hosting mini-retreats.
"But you listen to drone music every day!"
Of course! But Drone Day gives me built-in permission to carry on about my love of drone music even more effusively than usual. Surely I can't be expected to resist that opportunity?
In 2025, Bandcamp launched a brand new playlist feature just before Drone Day, so I made my first Bandcamp-only Drone Day playlist. On Bandcamp playlists I can only add music I've already purchased directly from the artists and labels. So much better than Spotify!
For 2026, May 30 is Drone Day. I'm compiling a new playlist for this year's FBSS mini-retreat in Portland as we speak, and in the meantime I'm importing the 2025 playlist into our DFOS. (Frankly, I'm not sure how listeners even manage to find these playlists on Bandcamp anyway).

If the earlier tracks are too out-there for your tastes, skip to the last two tracks ("Drone Plane" by Symphocat and "Dronescape 13" by Cousin Silas) and see what you think. You'll still have 90 minutes of deep slow drones (with a lighter vibe) to reward patient, attentive listening.
And of course no playlist of mine would ever be complete without quotes.

"In music, drone is an audio space where age-old markers, such as verse, chorus, verse or complex progressions are rendered redundant. [ ...] In essence, drone equals sustain -- sustained sustain, if you will."
